How do I use avatars on message boards?

Nowadays, forum avatars are supported by virtually any forum software on the market – even the free ones.

Most message board systems allow two ways of implementing your avatar: by remote link (see: How do I get the URL of an image?) and by upload (see: How do I download avatars?). Allowed file formats are usually jpg, gif and png.
